Newly signed Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz is not settling into the traditional backup role quietly.

In a bold statement to reporters during a Zoom call on Wednesday, Stolarz expressed his determination to challenge Joseph Woll for more playing time this upcoming season. The competitive spirit was evident as he shared his ambitions just 48 hours after inking a 2-year, $5 million contract with Toronto.
"There [was] an opportunity, I felt, [in Toronto]. In Florida, I knew my role as a back-up whereas here, Woller & I will be competing for starts and as a goalie, that's all you can ask for. Only one of us can play and you want to get as many starts as you can so when my name's called I want to go in there and try to seize the opportunity. But, at the same time, when I'm not, I pride myself on being a good teammate and I'm going to support Woller and push him,"
Stolarz remarked during the call.
Last season, Stolarz played in 27 games for the Florida Panthers, posting a 2.03 goals-against average (GAA) and a .925 save percentage (SV%), stats that caught the eye of the Leafs' management. His performance suggests he could be a substantial upgrade over the previous goalie options, potentially even outperforming Ilya Samsonov based on early assessments.
The Leafs' decision on how to allocate goaltending duties remains uncertain. However, the addition of Stolarz is seen as a strategic move to bolster the team's goaltending depth, providing them with a strong contender in the net who is eager to maximize his game time and contribute actively to the team's success.
