The swirling world of NHL rumors, the status of Marner contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs has become a focal point of discussion.

Recently, a contradiction emerged between two notable hockey personalities, creating a buzz among fans and sports media alike.
Paul Bissonnette, co-host of Spittin' Chiclets, set social media abuzz with his statement that Mitch Marner and the Leafs were already deep in extension talks. This claim was quickly countered by Darren Dreger on ‘First Up' who clarified the situation with a dose of reality.
"The actual mechanics of extension talk are a bit premature," Dreger explained, adding, "Do I believe that they are going to engage in contract discussions post July 1? Of course I do it is something that has been discussed internally but I don't think they've gotten to a point beyond maybe preliminary conversations with Darren Ferris."
While Bissonnette's comments painted a picture of ongoing negotiations, Dreger's insights suggest a more cautious approach by the Leafs. The team, under GM Brad Treliving, is not rushed to make a decision. Marner, a perennial 90+ point scorer, still has a year left on his current deal, which bags him $10.9M annually. However, the clock is ticking as the Leafs juggle the complexities of retaining key players without jeopardizing their salary cap.
The upcoming NHL draft and free agency period, just a week away, are poised to shed more light on Toronto's strategies. While the decision may not directly revolve around Marner, the Leafs' actions regarding other roster moves could hint at their plans for him.
