Since acquiring John Tavares in a blockbuster deal back in the summer of 2018, the Toronto Maple Leafs have enjoyed a robust setup at the center position.

Tavares' 7-year contract, worth a whopping 77 million dollars, paired him with Auston Matthews, creating a formidable one-two punch that has defined the Leafs' offensive strategy.
However, as we edge closer to 2024, signs of Tavares' play waning suggest it might be time for Toronto to chart a new course. The upcoming NHL Entry Draft in Las Vegas on June 28th and 29th offers a prime opportunity for the Leafs to start grooming a successor.
Holding the 23rd overall pick, the Leafs have a myriad of potential choices, particularly if they focus on reinforcing their center depth. Among the available talent, Jett Luchanko of the Guelph Storm stands out as a viable candidate who fits well within Toronto's draft range.
Luchanko, known for his dynamic playmaking skills and tireless work ethic, mirrors qualities seen in Tampa Bay's star Brayden Point. These are also qualities that the Leafs seem to covet.
Earlier this month, scouts like Adam Kimelman and Mike Morreale lauded Luchanko's abilities and potential. Kimelman highlighted, "Luchanko (5-11, 187) is an explosive skater who can contribute on both the power play and penalty kill. His impressive performance, notching 74 points this season, underscored his ability to step up when needed."
Meanwhile, Morreale praised Luchanko's versatility and on-ice intelligence, emphasizing his performance at the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game where he excelled in multiple categories.
"Luchanko's growth has been meteoric, especially in contrast to his earlier seasons. From a modest 14 points last year to leading his team with 74 points this season, his trajectory suggests a player ready for the next level. His playmaking, coupled with an innate hockey sense and relentless forechecking, make him an attractive prospect for any NHL team."
If Luchanko is available in the late teens, Brad Treliving, the Leafs' GM, might consider trading up. Luchanko's potential to contribute significantly in both regular and special team plays, combined with his high hockey IQ, positions him as a potential draft steal. For a team like Toronto, which needs to bolster its center depth soon, securing a player of Luchanko's caliber could be crucial.
As the draft approaches, the Leafs' strategy will likely focus on future-proofing their roster. With Tavares aging and their pipeline needing fresh talent, picking a player like Luchanko could well be a strategic move that pays dividends in the long term.
