As the Toronto Maple Leafs navigate the complexities of their salary cap this off-season, the focus isn't just on Mitch Marner - it should be on Calle Jarnkrok as well.

Aside from Marner and his $10.9M cap hit, another significant piece of their puzzle is Calle Jarnkrok's contract, which may not capture as many headlines but is pivotal for the team's financial flexibility.
Jarnkrok, who inked a 4-year, $8.4 million deal in the summer of 2022, carries a cap hit of $2.1 million. While not exorbitant, this amount is substantial for a team squeezed by cap limitations. Despite his veteran status and a career spanning 11 NHL seasons, Jarnkrok's performance hasn't matched the team's investment. In his second season with the Maple Leafs, his output dropped to 10 goals and 21 points over 52 games, a decline from 20 goals and 39 points in his first season with the team.
Analyzing his playoff contributions paints an even bleaker picture. Jarnkrok has accumulated only 5 goals and 22 points in 93 career playoff games across his tenures with the Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, and Maple Leafs. His playoff performance with Toronto has been particularly lackluster, netting a mere 1 goal and 3 points in 18 games, including a zero-point, minus-2 showing in a 7-game series loss to Boston this spring.
The Maple Leafs' roster boasts more dynamic options such as Auston Matthews, William Nylander, John Tavares, Matthew Knies, Max Domi, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Marner. Given Jarnkrok's nearly 15 minutes of ice time per game and opportunities on the power play, the expectation for greater productivity is warranted, especially when key players are either sidelined or not performing to potential.
Despite the challenges presented by his contract, including a modified no-trade clause allowing Jarnkrok to block trades to 10 teams, the Leafs should find viable avenues to move him. His profile as a seasoned forward capable of contributing 12-15 goals and 30-35 points, while also participating in special teams, makes him an appealing trade target for many clubs.
In an off-season poised for significant change, the Maple Leafs must reassess their commitments and optimize their roster. Addressing Jarnkrok's situation is just as crucial as resolving the larger financial puzzle presented by Marner's contract.
